Sophie Mae
OK, this is not the Diaper Diva, but these days you can refer to me as the Diaper Dude, Nina's husband and partner in caring for our five-week-old daughter, Sophie Mae.
For those of you who have been wondering what happened to the Diva, here's our story:
On the afternoon of Feb. 8, I received a phone call from our adoption agency. A young woman, nine months pregnant, was seeking to place her child and had picked our profile as potential parents.
I called her and talked for a half hour or so, and then Nina called her that night. She was sweet and reserved, and we liked her a lot. By 7 p.m., we received another call from the agency. The birthmother had chosen us, but the kicker was that she wanted us there when the child was born. This set off a frenzied weekend, where we were receiving paperwork, faxing paperwork and preparing to head to Texas -- quickly -- because she was two days past due.
On Monday morning, Nina and Hendrick were on a plane. By the middle of the week, we all were in our new, though temporary, home: a two-bedroom apartment in Killeen, Texas, awaiting the birth. Eight days after first talking with the birthmother, we were in a waiting room at Darnall Army Medical Center on Fort Hood. Sophie was born at 20:21 (military time) on Feb. 16, in the same hospital where Hendrick was born, exactly two years and four months before.
We returned from Texas a week and a half ago -- sick, tired and slightly frazzled. The past week has been one of settling in. But rest assured, dear readers, the Diva and her two children are fine. And, while Nina was looking forward to a potty-trained Hendrick and her blog name becoming obsolete, she's fine with the fact that a new little one has condemned us to another couple of years of Huggies. She will return to her part-time gig at the Press in May.
When we started this journey, we were prepared to wait, knowing that adopting couples with children often are not the first choice of birthmothers seeking to place. But a 24-year-old woman with a huge heart saw something in us, and, honored and humbled, we promised her our very best for her child, for our child. And, just like that, our lives are changed forever.
Texas, sweet Texas has been very good to us.
